Speak at a commissioners meeting

The Board of Commissioners sets aside one public-comment period at each regular meeting — not at special meetings or work sessions, unless the Board decides to add one that night. See the meetings page for the current schedule, location, and agenda link.

Sign up in person. There’s no online form. Fill out a speaker card at the podium before the meeting starts — the county asks for at least ten minutes’ notice, so get there early rather than right at the gavel.

What to expect once you’re up: you get three minutes, and you start by stating your name and address. Stick to matters the Board actually has authority over — no campaign speeches, and speakers are expected to be courteous in their language and presentation. The Board mostly just listens during comment; if your issue needs real follow-up, they’ll typically hand it to the County Manager rather than debate it on the spot.

Every commissioner represents the whole county — Haywood elects all five at large, not by district, so there’s no single “your” commissioner tied to where you live. The county’s Board of Commissioners page lists all five with a link to each one’s contact info.
